About

We take children’s books seriously.

Children want the same things we want: to laugh, to be challenged, to be entertained and delighted.” – Theodore Giesel (aka Dr. Seuss)

About Bright Kids Books – the short story…

The books you read as a child can have a profound and lasting impact on how you see the world and your place in it. And just like food, some books contain more (brain) nutrients than others. So the books we read and recommend at Bright Kids Books celebrate diversity, equality, nature, all types of family arrangements – and encourage growth, learning, imagination and independent thought. Our tagline – ‘Thinking kids can change the world’ – pretty much sums us up. Best of all, parents and carers will be entertained as well. To borrow this line from CS Lewis, “A children’s story which is enjoyed only by children is a bad children’s story.” Happy reading!

About Bright Kids Books – the longer story…

Discovering how delightful and engaging so many children’s books are (even for adults) is one of the joys of caring for a child – part of an amazing parenting journey. Children’s books amuse, they educate, they entertain, and they take us back to our own youth. To quote CS Lewis, “A children’s story which is enjoyed only by children is a bad children’s story. The good ones last.” And at Bright Kids Books, our goal is to share these discoveries with you.

The seed for Bright Kids Books was planted when Kristen (co-curator) was looking for a birthday present for her niece, who was 4 at the time, and whose mother was absent. It seemed every book Kristen picked up had a strong mother figure – not a dad, not a grandparent, not even an aunt or uncle. She didn’t want to compound her niece’s grief and separation anxiety by highlighting what she was missing. In the end Kristen was thrilled to find Mem Fox’s classic Possum Magic, where Grandma Poss looks after little Hush – but it would’ve been so much easier and less time-consuming if only there had been a resource to guide her. Bright Kids Books is that resource.

So we decided to create a magazine style blog that recommends kids books and build a community that celebrates and acknowledges all types of family groups and living arrangements – from same-sex parents, to those living with their grandparents – and everyone and everything in between. We’ve spoken to librarians, researched online and off, read prodigiously and shared ideas with other parents, carers and our loyal readers – to find the perfect books to help develop a child’s love of reading.

And finally, we’ve also reviewed and selected a range of helpful books with parents and carers in mind… whether you be a new parent who’s struggling to sleep, an expecting mom who doesn’t know what to expect, or an auntie looking for the perfect gift for your nephew… there’s a range of great books perfect for you.

The really good news is that we combine our love of reading and individual attention with the convenience, value and range of Amazon and The Book Depository. So if you’re a parent or carer who wants to spend more time reading and sharing your love of books, Bright Kids Books is for you. We’re continually adding new segments and features to the site, so be sure to bookmark us and visit again!

Kind regards,

The team at Bright Kids Books
